Lap Joint Slab Board Stool

This is one of my oldest SCA pieces of furniture I have made. It’s a very simple lap jointed stool. I have made close to a dozen of these over the years mainly do to an unlimited source of high quality scrap plywood from my company. I am including a link to a couple draft plans for this stool.

Why I didn’t design it exactly like period examples.

I like to have tall stools. If I wanted a chair to slouch in, I would build a chair.

  1. I wanted a design that could be made by other people with little or no experience working with wood.
  2. Less tools needed the better.
  3. Those half circles were already in the scrap plywood, so I decided to use them rather than try to cut the ply down to a smaller size.

There are numerous examples of this kind of stool. They were not built to be taken apart, but its easy enough to make them break apart. Apart from that the most noticeable difference is the period style had sloped sides.

Examples of this style stool.
