Turned Thread Spools & Drop Spindle

Today was a play day out in the shop. I have no projects that are needed done ASAP, and I spent last weekend cleaning the shop. Just plain old ME time. I decided to do some turning. Mistress Agnes had asked about making some thread spools out of a couple chunks of mahogany.

I was trying to get the most use out of the wood as I could. I could have made the long spools a little shorter, but they started to look out of proportion…so 4 long spools and a couple of extra chunks for whatever.

I added a few darken lines by holding a copper wire down on the spolls while the lathe was turning.

I then dug into the bag of Dark Walnut flooring scraps Dana gave me (not to self: must make spools for Dana) and decided I need a drop spindle for the buffalo fleece I gathered at AT war. Forgot to take pictures during the process as I just got way to “IN” to the turning.

The Whorl is separate from the shaft, and has toothpick inlay.

I really like the slanted cuts in the top and bottom of the spindle. Unfortunately I cut the top slot on the wrong side,so the tread has to do a half twist to sit right in the slot. Doesn’t effect the way it works, but it does mess with the pretty factor.

Also made some wool cards but that is for another post.
