Baroness’ Tourney 2009

Baroness’ Birthday tourney took place yesterday. It was a smallish event, but still covered all the basics. Rapier, and Heavy fighting, A&S contests, dancing, feasting, drinking, court, and merchant row. I ran a small merchanting booth selling wooden goodes (turned stuff and furniture). Since I spent most of my time merchanting, and hanging out with good people, I didn’t take as many images as I normally would… still I think I covered a bit.

8-9 merchants  set up shop this time. Goods ranging from garb, thread, and hats, to books, chests, and spools.

This is my little shop. The big item to go fast this time was simple wooden spools. I will have to make up a whole slew next time  merchant. Neither the yurt or bedioun tent went, but the folding 16th century stool went for a trade with sister apprentice Alienor for three Henry Taylor carving tools and a bunch of other misc. tools. I think I made out like a bandit. Just the HT tools are worth over a 100$ new…woot.

Spindles and drop spindles I made up for the event.

more spools, lace bobbins, and a niddy noddy.

This is me with the helm I made over a decade ago. I had no idea what I was doing when I made the helm. The jaw is way to pronounced landing the affectionate nickname I gave it “Monkey Jaw”. I am embarrassed at just how bad the weld job i did on the grill. I’ll post an item on this helm in a few days.

Dr. Carus made a pickle cathedral. Gerkin buttressing with dill stained glass windows…LOL

Anika was entered into the order of the pillars of Tir Righ.

Eleanor was made Caitrin’s Arts Champion , shortly before I was called up for the Science Champion. I am secretly thrilled. I don’t covet awards, but I just have this thing for anything labeled science. Caitrin has A&S champions that secretly want to destroy the universe. This might be a bad sign.

My loot from the day. Tools, a book on medieval tools, a book on how to make wheellock pistols, a boat load of canadian tire money, and my Science champion arm band… good day.

I also recieved this magnificently hideous fabric from Aleinor

I am thinking of making the red and yellow polka dot kaften out of the hideous material…but I am being encouraged to use it as a lining…

What do you think… Hideous outer, or inner?

  1. A good day indeed, congratulations!

I’m curious about the books. I can’t quite read the cover from your picture–could you perhaps send or post a closeup, maybe with some info about how to get a copy? About all I can tell from my screen is that the author used the Bourdichon painting for cover art, and that mainly because I’ve spent so much time mining that picture for toolmaking details.

As for the other book, I still remember the A&S display at the SCA 20-year celebration in Ansteorra. The then Baron of Bryn Galad showed a matched pair of matchlock pistols, handmade even to the barrels, that he had done. He even mirror-imaged them, and engraved the steel so nicely that they actually looked like period South German guns.

Is your book a xerox in a folder? I would be very interested in a copy myself if it’s any good, and would be glad to pay any copy and mailing costs. I’ve always liked muzzleloading guns, and been vaguely irritated at how hard it is to find good detailed plans for anything older than the 18th century.

Finally, if your horrified neighbors descend on you over your actually thinking about making _handguns_, and drive you into exile, please rest assured of your welcome in the more southerly parts of AnTir.

  2. The 1st book you mention is really more of a booklet. I believe its a Complete Anachronist issue from 2003-4. I can’t seem to find it at the moment,so I might have left it at work.

The Wheellock book is a xerox. I have not had much time to peruse it, but I did read the first page or two, and it doesn’t seem to give a date to the examples given in the book.

I really wish I could have seen the matched set of guns. I am a bit of a hack at wood working, and I am always amazed at the skill some people have.

I am not to worried about the neighbours. They seem to have gotten use to the bizarre array of things being built in the backyard…and if they complained too much, who would do the emergency welding/woodworking for them.
