Turkish Carpet Project v1.5 ~ More Cartoons
I was asked how the cartoon was coming. The answer… Slowly!
I will be starting a whole new cartoon soon, as this first one was just to work out some pattern issues. The first problem being the lack of a middle section in the original painting., Thanks to a suggestion from Mistress Agnes, I have decided to try filling it with repeating element from the black border section.

Second issue is filling the strange flattened triangle sections that are part of the centers border. Maybe a squidy Cthuhulu like pattern.

The inner portion of the carpet has to be shrunk by 4 knots the whole way around, This is easily done as there is a 2 knot deep border that doesn’t affect any of the complex pattern bits.

This is a computer cut & paste model of what the carpet will look like when done.
I also started doing the math. There will be ~ 132,000 knots in the carpet (not including selvage and start/ end flat weave sections). Each knot using ~ 2″ of wool which works out to 21,933 feet of wool (7311 yd. / 6685 m.)
Still looking for middle eastern / turkish looms in period, and type of wool, and dye stuff.
Fun & Stuff & Things.
Lovely work! And wonderful descriptions of the process you and going through to make this rug.
I finished a carpet quite similar to yours for a weaver who died: his family wanted the rug he’d made, so I wove just the last border. It’s pattern is from The Mass at St. Giles (National Gallery in London) and is very like yours.

Sara´s last blog ..Bison? Dyson?
Hello Sara, and a massive thankyou.
I have not seen that particular painting before. I have been struggling with the central motif for a while now. I had decided to use a small repeat pattern, but I just thought it didn’t look right. I have been using another hans holbien painting for the new central medalion http://www.flickr.com/photos/26911776@N06/2516805005/in/set-72157606060880661/
but its a little hard to pick up details for this angle. The link to the original painting is much clearer.
I quickly took a look around your site, and have added you to my RSS file. I love the stuff you are making, and that fact you have a yurt rocks.
thank you again… can’t wait till I get home to start making the final cartoon.
Hi Mary;
Peter had binders full of slides that he took in the National Gallery and perhaps the V & A, of carpets, and paintings with carpets. They are not always the best quality: low light and no flash, but they might give you some insight and perhaps a painting or two to look for. I can scan a few in and see if they would help you in your search for a central medallion?
