Soooo. Months and months ago at the last Tir Righ Coronet tourney held at the Albion fairgrounds, Viscountess Safiye al-Konstantiniyye and myself decided to set up a Turkish/middle eastern happy land. For lack of a better name we decided to call it WahaVahaBrouhaha. Between the two of us we managed to completely enclose a large picnic structure with Turkish carpets, sari’s, and fabric. The over head lights had fabric panels draped under them to allow a lot of light, but hide the modern conveniences. We had Shareef Musiqi al-Rashid playing the Doumbek & Baglama Saz, while Mistress Agnes Cresewyke danced for our pleasure. Over all I think it was a huge success with a slew of people rotating through the oasis. Unfortunately a big storm came through the area and the high winds, and then the torrential rains put a damper on the festivities. Still I believe this will not be the last time Middle Eastern Happy land will appear in Tir Righ. Thanks Go out to Safiye for all the effort, and the pictures, as my camera was hooped.

I had originally taken a workshop on the subject taught by Mistress Agnes, and had played with it a bit since then… but this was going to be my first banner. Mostly just images after the jump

Decided to free hand the turnip. It ended up a little large. All hail the mutant turnip.

I got to go to Daffodil Tourney this year. I’ll be posting soon about the annual Seagirtian event, but I thought I do a quick post on my entry into the A&S tourney.

The contest was “items inspired in some way by the theme “daffodil”. Since I only decided to go to the event the weekend before, I decided to do a quick carpet sample piece. The daffodil design is from a blanket I found online. It was a grid pattern so it adapted well. The tourney is in its 33 year, and my heraldic obsession & mascot is the turnip named Ash. Design done, I warped up the porto-loom with 52 threads (4 threads for the bound edges each side, and 22 sets of threads for the knots). I should have done the sides in a different color, as they just blend with the knots right now.

I still am having some issues with the edge binding. Will be working on that in my next mini project.

The weft threads were cotton sewing thread (2 shoots).

I had every color I needed except a nice yellow. The gold wool I had just didn’t seem right. I did two skeins of wool. One pre-mordant in alum, and one with no mordant. The dye stuff is Turmeric and its 100%wof. ( I think you could use a lot less considering the amount of slug on the bottom of the pot. I also added 1 tbs of vinegar to try to get it brighter yellow.

Cooked it at a low heat for 30minutes.

The large skein is the pre-mordant Alum one, the one on the right on mordant. The color is just about the same.

I feel kind of stupid though. So many of these A&S things are little throw away things put in place for something to do while the fighters fight. I didn’t document it at all. I had the cartoon for the design and a few notes jotted down in pencil. Well four judges sat down with principality A&S judging forms, and the judging was pretty bad. They all seemed to like what I had did alot, but the lack of documentation was noted down ALOT….

I hunted down the organizer to thank her and the judges, and apologized for wasting their time. No Documentation… Bad Apprentice… No Cookie for You!

I entered the Tir Righ A&S competition this year. I had originally wanted to enter a set of conjecturally accurate trestle table. Everything was going swimmingly until disaster happened. While rushing from one theatre at the Vancouver International Film Festival to another, I fell and broke my ribs. The pain associated in trying to mortise holes into hard aged oak was unbearable. Having already declared my entry into the fray (single entry – non-champion) I was forced to enter the prototypes. This is not what I had wanted to enter. I feel like I did a mediocre entry and part of that is reflected in my documentation. I have always had great difficulties with language, and it shows in the file. I had though I would polish it up and put it online. I have put it off for weeks now, and I know that unless I release it now as it is, it will never get put up. The only difference between this version of the documentation and what I entered into the competition is the line drawing of the images of the existing trestle table. This was done at the request of the images owner, as he didn’t want electronic distribution. Thank You Jeffrey Johnson for the images. They helped a ton.

For what is is worth

Tir Righ A&S Championship is over for this year. We had three full competitors, and three single entry entrants. I was a varied lot of items to judge this year. Polychrome leather work to Astronomical Navigation, to bone carving. It takes a lot of gumption to enter these contest and I appauld them all… I know what its like as I too this year entered a single item.

A huge wack load of images after the jump

Constance de Montbard had the single highest scoring item in the competion. She was called before court and told that she should learn what she did at the principality level and take it to Kingdom. This was a single entry she wasn’t trying for Champion this time around.

Dr. Carus enter the full competion with a sun navigation dial, and a near horizon sun stone sight gauge (I could be wrong I didn’t write it down, but it was a cool optical effect), and a cloak that turns into a tent (also an idea I want to play with).

My entry was a conjecturably accurate table trestle. I didn’t get to display the finished product so I made due with the prototypes I had already made. Judging went as I thought it would. I know writing is difficult for myself, and presenting a piece is also not my forte, but I know what I am interested in, so fielding questions was easy.

A couple of weekends ago at the Tir Righ Fall Tourney, Misress Agnes Cresewyke arranged to have a last minute A&S display. We had 7 people drop off items ranging from bone carved earspoons to Japanese tamari balls. Much discussion was had, and I would call it a success.

Mistress Agnes, Uilliam mac Fearchar mhic Gille Aindrias, and Constance de Montbard hanging out at the display. I forgot to take a photo of my entry. Agnes is sitting on my triangle back stool, and the german folding stool is on the table.

Morweena of House Desdecardo displayed her leather pouch with tablet woven trim dyed with Madder and acorns. Mistress Agnes entered her St. Brigette’s coif, and a work in progress pouch based on an existing period example.

Not a bad display considering it was a last minute activity.

In 2005 I taught a Pole Lathe class up at Cinton war. It was only possible to teach this class up at Clinton due to the multi-day event left enough time to set it up, and the property owners permission to cut down multiple poplar trees for the spring poles. I never took images of the set-up but thanks Isabelle de Lacey I finally have pictures to share. This picture shows the set up of all four lathes (one is hiding behind the bodgers lathe~yellow lathe).

I found a super deal on sets of 10 turning tools for $8. I bought four sets, so I didn’t have to share my good tools with the students. They are cheap, and pretty brutal, and are inconstant need of sharpening. That said I still use the parting and side skews from the set. Once they get too short from sharpening, I just grab another from the sets. Please ignore the shoes and the nasty hair. I had been camping for almost two weeks at this point and the period shoes were killing me.

One of my students hard at work. This was my primary lathe for quite a while. It originally started out as a trestle table I built. One day after removing the table top I struck me as an easy conversion to a lathe. Make poppets, and away you go.

The lathe I am working on is my uber cheap lathe. Using a sawhorse as my base I screwed an upright into the horse. Sticking out of the upright is a furniture hanger that I filled the one end to a point. Another upright also had a the filed down hanger, but this one got clamped into place with c-clamps. You place the blank between the uprights and lash (or clamp) the uprights tight. I included this kind of lathe to demostrate that you can build a lathe using very little money or tools.

My tudor house was the base for the class. The sun shade was built out of the remains of my original tudor house and a couple of 2×4′s

This last weekend was the second annual AT War (Avacal/Tir Righ). Approx 400 people gathered in Clearwater BC to party with the buffalo.

two words = Awesome Event.

We had a large contingent of royals from kingdom, and principalities. The streets were lined with a large amount of period pavilions. THUA (Their Highness University of Avacal) session had a large amount of interesting classes. The Tacky Tahiti erik party was packed and a big slice of awesome sauce.

There was a Siege A&S contest. You had to use two random items from the big pile of stuff, and at least one item from the site itself. ”No hunting of the buffalo allowed “. There was a large amount of entries into the contest including Alchemy from trees (Tar & Lye), Popsicle stick Trebuchet, Plague Baby..etc. We had four entries from my encampment. Mistress Agnes made a nine man morris board/bag, Mariko made a paper hawk kite, Maille made wooden bead rosary, and I entered an AT war banner. The A&S point went to Tir Righ for my war banner (they really liked the use of the theme logo, but found my stitchery very rudimentary….LOL)

Mistress Agnes finally was recognized for her constantly inspiring dedication to persona related stuff. The comment “Like she just walked out of an illumination” was used, and I couldn’t agree more. She makes a great addition to the Order of the Carp.

Tacky Tahiti erik party was great. Strangely the party lead to a weird project I am going to be working on. A series of articles on “Douche bags from History”. My vote is for Martin Luther for vandalizing church property.

Took two classes with THUA this event

I took an introduction to tablet weaving class. It was the method were you attach the work to your belt, and you maintain the tension. This is a method I don’t seem to have much of an aptitude for. Even the teacher said it would be better if I made a frame for the weaving. I seem to want to rock and shift alot while weaving causing change in tension in the weft.

I also took a class on scrimshaw etching taught by Mistress Kate (Who has the greatest “I own the world” swagger). I made a small tablet with an etched turnip, Two headed cock, and the motto “Not My Monkey”. I’ll find an image of it after I unpack (and find where I put it).

I also walked the perimeter of the buffalo fences and gathered a bunch of molted fleece. Cleaned it last night, and just waiting for it to dry.

I can’t wait till next year.

Back in March I attended a shoe making workshop. It was a one day course, where we recieved enough supplies to finish 1 full set of shoes each. I had initialy all but finished the shoes within a week off taking the course, but then the turned bedframe project took over my life. Now that the bed is done (except for the painting) I turned back to finishing the shoes.

Not to bad for a first set of shoes. The blue innner soles are from a set of old runners. Those with a thick felt inner make these my most comfortable shoes I own.

My job was to organize and run a one day A&S display. Everything went reasonably well, but I do admit to forgeting to take images of everyones displays including my own. Well, thank goodness my sister aprenti Alienor managed to take a couple images of my display. Huzzah Alienor.
