I entered a Triangular stool in the A&S contest. I had Mistress Safiye, Alicia, & Elizabeth Blencowe as my judges. They were very inquisitive & supportive.

A segment of the Rapier community were presented as the newest Tir Righian Guild.  The Company of Defense will be students of period methods of  Cut & Thrust Combat.

They even put on a bit of a demo for the gathered  royals and court .

Then the best part of the War… The Eric party.  Smaller social gathering were happening in encampments, but a large portion of the near 400 people in attendance  came out to party with one and all.

I took a whole bunch of pictures at Coronet this last weekend, but most of the court and fighting pictures turned out awful. The majority of the good images I got were on my early Saturday morning walk around. It came as a bit of a good surprise at just how many period/periodesque/non modern pavilions were set up at the event. So I thought I would just post the images as a recap from the event.

This was the first time I set up the new temporary shelter. Learned I need to get a rigid pole to span the length of the tarp. The tarp bags a bit to much for my comfort. I slept in the small space along the back wall of the tarp. I used blankets to cover the sleeping area. The space was a little cramped as it was exactly the same width as my cot. Not room to get changed without some serious yoga moves. Planning on expanding the area out another 18″.

I am aways so much happier when all my mundane items are hidden away. It may not be a period tent, but it sure is not modern.

I heart this Bedouin…. I personally would want more strapping, and loose the finials, drop the sides a bit…. but its black, and has those great center band wooden rope toggles…. I want my black tent!

Friday night was just a set up night. The Baronial pavilion went up in record time. I think that was due to the motivation of getting out of the rain.

I am total in awe of the awesome job that was done on the erics. 48 eric poles where made by Lord Adam Fairamay, and the baroness and a few uber awesome peeps worked on the eric banners. 4 sets were made (Black/Pegasus, Red/griffin, White/unicorn, & Yellow/dragon) each set had sections with kingdom, principality & baronial populace badges on the dags. In the background you can see the full range of the campers.  I missed taking photos of the heavy tourney. It was raining enough that I couldn’t get a shot without water on the lens.

A good sized turn out for the archery tourney. This was the first tourney I have entered. I did alot better than I thought, but I chalk that up to luck more than skill. The weather did get better for the tourney… enough so I got a good case of tourney chest were I forgot to put on the sunblock….doh.

Favorite part of the tourney was the balloon shoot. Everyone wrote there names on a balloon, and last balloon inflated wins the round. It came down to my apprentice sister Margaret Hamilton of Stirlingshire & myself. I guess people where to busy trying to get rid of the skilled archers to bother with mine. (farthest left orange= Mary, Bottom Blue = Margaret.

The winner of the Heavy defenders tourney was Arminius Scorpius. Last years defender had to resign when he stepped up to the mantle of Prince of Tir Righ. Arminius was made defender by baron griffin in Prince Ians place, but he won the right this year to the title of defender.

May Gamers (also known by some as May Bardic) took place yesterday. It was a smallish affair, but also kind of awesome. It was one of those events where just about everyone ended up doing all sort of stuff.

I ran my first games tourney as Lions Gate games marshal. I decided on making a format that encouraged volume of play over skill. I called it a Gluttony Tournament where the goal was to play as much and as many of the games provided. The games I included where 9 man morris, Tablut (tafl variation), shut the box, Pall MAll, and three kinds of boules (Siege, Carpet & Jeu de boules).

I had three different ways to win in the tournament

1. Righteous Indignation over a loss, (Malie over a bad stroke during a pall mall game… mallet flying, arms waving, bellowing disbelief… simply priceless)

2. Obessed over a single game, Ylas over carpet boules (looked like Lucien was going to take the title til Ylas did a last minute marathon).

3. Glutton, most sets played of all 5 games, Agnes Cresewyke did 3 full sets and was partially done two more sets.

The winners all are getting game boards I will be making customized to their persona’s time, place, and preference.

The new Bardic Champion is James Wolfden.

There was a best dinner spread contests too. Agnes and her minions did a late period germanesque table, and the other entry was an early period norse like table. The Baroness ruled they were both equally awesome and gave glass vessels to both entrants.

Three children entered the tourney,all walked away with prizes.

During a lull in court were were treated to a performance from the kingdom bardic champion.

Past bardic defender Kevin thanked the two single bardic entries for stepping up and doing their first ever bardic competition.

Kevin then stepped down as champion and joined the order of the lions fang (Former champions of Lions Gate)

James was then brought forward to become the new Bardic defender.

Way too go James!

The event was split into a couple of areas. The main building held court, and the A&S competition, but most of the action took place in the barn.

Youth Combat Tourney… Always good to see the young’uns clubbing each other.

I have a serious case of lust for these boots. I have no intention of going Mongol, but damb I want me these for wearing around the house. My sorrels are getting old.

There was a decent amount of merchants. Gaukler wares, and Sir Kerigan’s leather goods always are good too see, but this year the score of the event was unnamed merchant who sold me a book on Nomadic Tents for $10. Woot.

I am in awe of some of the stuff the Seagirtian have. There was a set of three wall painting that just were beautiful.

This horrid picture is the best of a bad lot of Savaric with Safiye  being called up in court. Savaric, inspired by Safiye took the tourney and is the newest in a long line of distinguished Daffodil Defenders. Does a really large set of matching metal hats lie in their future?

The contest was “items inspired in some way by the theme “daffodil”. Since I only decided to go to the event the weekend before, I decided to do a quick carpet sample piece. The daffodil design is from a blanket I found online. It was a grid pattern so it adapted well. The tourney is in its 33 year, and my heraldic obsession & mascot is the turnip named Ash.  Design done, I warped up the porto-loom with  52 threads (4 threads for the bound edges each side, and 22 sets of threads for the knots). I should have done the sides in a different color, as they just blend with the knots right now.

I still am having some issues with the edge binding. Will be working on that in my next mini project.

The weft threads were cotton sewing thread (2 shoots).

I had every color I needed except a nice yellow. The gold wool I had just didn’t seem right. I did two skeins of wool. One pre-mordant in alum, and one with no mordant. The dye stuff is Turmeric and its 100%wof. ( I think you could use a lot less considering the amount of slug on the bottom of the pot. I also added 1 tbs of vinegar to try to get it brighter yellow.

Cooked it at a low heat for 30minutes.

The large skein is the pre-mordant Alum one, the one on the right on mordant. The color is just about the same.

I feel kind of stupid though. So many of these A&S things are little throw away things put in place for something to do while the fighters fight. I didn’t document it at all. I had the cartoon for the design and a few notes jotted down in pencil. Well four judges sat down with principality A&S judging forms, and the judging was pretty bad. They all seemed to like what I had did alot, but the lack of documentation was noted down ALOT….

I hunted down the organizer to thank her and the judges, and apologized for wasting their time. No Documentation… Bad Apprentice… No Cookie for You!

This site was a sight to see. The detail to woodworking through out the building was a fantastic surprise. Western Canada does not have a lot of spectacular building to play in. The Majority of our province is under 100 years old. The days of splendorific building were for the most part over by the time the logging and mining camps grew into cities. Small little pockets of awesome here in BC make me want to play in countries that have centuries (milleniums) worth of history.

I am stifling my enthusiasm and letting the images speak for themselves.

This was the first event where I was gamesmaster for the Barony. I didn’t manage to run a tourney for this event, but I did managed to see numerous people playing 9Men and tafl.

Speaking of Games, and horrible ,horrible mistakes….

Their Excellency’s swore me in as their officer, and then handed me a stick with a pointy end. I am going to convert it to a banner pole as me and pointy sticks mean bad things will be happening shortly.

**update: Since a few people have express concern over the fate of the gamesmaster’s rod (that sound mildly dirty), I was not planning on altering the existing wand at all. I had thought of trying to make a duplicate rook that would friction fit the doweling. The registered gamesmater banner would slip over the dowel. To my knowledge I have never seen the thing before last night, and I suspect it usually only makes an appearance at officer change swearing in ceremonies (I could be wrong).  I had thought as a banner wand it would get seen at a lot more events. I also was planning on running it by their excellencies before I proceeded on this idea, as I did with getting permission to mark the boards property of Lions Gate last night. Thank you for your concern, it is appreciated and noted. **

More Gaming…woot!

Lord Adam Fairamay set up shop, and was selling sundry wooden textile tools. I always like talking to him, as it always turns into a conversation on building ideas.

There was dancing in the Red room. I am ashamed to have no spent more time up there watching. They had two teachers come from down south to teach dance, and I have no pictures. Bad Mary…no cookie! I even missed the Turkish Whirlly dancing… doh.

Mistress Sara de Bonneville of Blatha An Oir & HL Catherine of the Rowan Tree, Barony of Borealis thank you for coming out and helping.  HL Rhiannon, and Lady R’bya also to be commended for teaching dance.

HL Uilliam taught a basic brewing class in the kitchen. We got to sample some of his brown ale, porter, and the banana waffle beer (flying monkey – Belguim yeast brew). There were also classes & presentations held on LG Sergeantry , Kumihimo braiding, and book binding guild, and brewers guild.

Court inevitably happended. Tomas took the A&S defenders title.

Her Ladyship Rhiannon ap Gwynedd was sworn in as Mistress of the Dance.

8-9 merchants  set up shop this time. Goods ranging from garb, thread, and hats, to books, chests, and spools.

This is my little shop. The big item to go fast this time was simple wooden spools. I will have to make up a whole slew next time  merchant. Neither the yurt or bedioun tent went, but the folding 16th century stool went for a trade with sister apprentice Alienor for three Henry Taylor carving tools and a bunch of other misc. tools. I think I made out like a bandit. Just the HT tools are worth over a 100$ new…woot.

This is me with the helm I made over a decade ago. I had no idea what I was doing when I made the helm. The jaw is way to pronounced landing the affectionate nickname I gave it “Monkey Jaw”. I am embarrassed at just how bad the weld job i did on the grill. I’ll post an item on this helm in a few days.

Eleanor was made Caitrin’s Arts Champion , shortly before I was called up for the Science Champion. I am secretly thrilled. I don’t covet awards, but I just have this thing for anything labeled science. Caitrin has A&S champions that secretly want to destroy the universe. This might be a bad sign.
